With his two best known early pieces, Ecstatic Orange and Yellow Pages, Michael Torke (b. 1961) is said to have defined post-Minimalism. Hailed as "a master orchestrator" and "the Ravel of his generation" (The New York Times), Torke has created a substantial body of work in virtually every genre, each with a characteristic personal stamp that combines restless rhythmic energy with ravishingly beautiful melodies. For one week in late May, clarinetist Richard Stoltzman was in Bratislava, Slovakia to record several new works written for him with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Kirk Trevor. All the works are to be released on the MMC Recordings label and are part of the recording project assembled by composer William Thomas McKinley and Master Musicians Collective. As part of an ongoing series of interviews and footage from recording and rehearsals documenting the MMC sessions in Bratislava this past May, composer Elliot Miles McKinley sat down with Mr. Stoltzman for this interview.

Retired in 1999 from the Eastman School of Music, Sydney Hodkinson maintains an active career as a composer, conductor and educator. He teaches in the Aspen Music Festival and School’s Composition program, conducts the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble (ACE), and currently holds the Almand Chair of Composition at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida.
